Stephens no sock run for suicide

By Stephen Reburn Join Me

Hi everyone, I'm doing a FeelGood fundraiser to support Pieta.

FeelGood with Pieta is about taking small steps towards better mental health, while also raising the funds that Pieta need to keep their doors open and services free, for everyone. They provide therapeutic counseling services to people who are in suicidal distress and those who engage in self-harm.

Will you please support my efforts with a donation to Pieta? Every euro makes a BIG difference.

Thank you in advance.

My Updates

Ever Tried. Ever Failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.

I am getting out of hospital today and the only road I'm on now is the road to recovery. To put things in perspective, I have superficial injuries, soar feet and a few bangs and bumps. I can willingly handle any of this physical pain because my mental suffering has trained me for it and I know if I can survive that, well then I can survive almost anything. I want that to be a message for people. To be able wear our mental suffering as a badge of strength to show we can fight through and continue to fight through anything including mental illness.
But apart from this, my physical pains are irrelevant, because there are people suffering real pain in this country at the moment. Contemplating life or death, struggling to find meaning and ultimately dieing at a rapid rate. Yet I have already been asked about my feet more times than I was ever asked about my mental health, this is something we are working to change, we need to start asking the questions around mental health, even though the answer may be 'I'm fine' when it's not the case, but the question gives an opportunity to reach out, we need to strive for change, we just need to, or we risk severe pain and loss.

I have also referred to my feet more times than my mental health, so I too need to learn from these mistakes. We are all learning, there is no right or wrong way to talk about mental health once it is being talked about and it is in a progressive manner. We are making mistakes, learning and yearning for knowledge around it which is great, as it means it is bringing us closer to true understanding of it. I could write a book on the mistakes, misjudgements and the under-estimations that I have made this week alone, but that is what happens when trying new things. You make mistakes. I sometimes focused on the physical distance too much and at times lost sight of the bigger picture but I have learned so much in the last few days about myself and about our great people. That's the process, make a mistake, learn from it and continue. It was because of the safe haven of openness and acceptance created by everyone supporting, that I could feel comfortable making mistakes and I could  show my own  failings as a human without being criticised for them. I laid bare who I was with my thoughts and intentions and it was accepted. So it is a credit to everyone that yous are creating this openness and sense of community. If it can be done for me, it can be done for anyone, especially those who are coming out with their mental health/illness stories.

A big thank you again to everyone for being apart of it, yous liked, shared, donated, messaged, phoned, met along the way, congratulated  and commiserated like a massive family, also a big thank you to all at cavan hospital who treated me like a wee pet lamb. It is hard to say how grateful I am for all of this because I am only using mere words to thank your massive actions. The donations continue to pour in and that is down to you, if we could keep that going and raise as much as we can for Pieta House so they can continue to save even more lives, it would be appreciated not only by me but by the families who benefit from it.

I feel I owe it to myself, to the people who supported and to the ones suffering to try this challenge again, until it is accomplished, in a hope that more awareness is made. I know with the right dedication and action that anything is possible and I refuse to recognise my own limitations.
Here are two quotes from some of my heroes that enclasp my idea of what was done and the chance of doing it again,
"It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation" - Herman Melville
"Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better" - Samuel Beckett

Together in wholeness and oneness, as a community, as a united group, we have made a difference, we have created and continue to create a vision of a different world where high suicide and mental illness rates are not a normality. I truly believe we have began something here, there is a change happening.
We pursued something and yes I failed and I alone fell short on the distance which I take full accountability for, but the physical aspect was only a small lace on a very big shoe. So what did we as a community try to achieve and/or achieve?
To run barefooted for 400km
To come together to get people to come out about their own mental health
To remember those who died by suicide and to help their families cope with the loss
To raise vital funds for pieta House who will save lives with the donations made
To attempt to change perspectives with a sense of urgency
To promote empathy, generosity and compassion as basic parts of the human condition
To show that thoughts, emotions, fears, doubts, anxieties and insecurities may always be there (as they have been with me) but they do not have to hold us back from pursuing what is important to us
To plant a seed of change, so people will be inspired to help, to listen and even to plan there own events in an effort to make a difference.

I thank you all, if anyone wants to chat about anything, even just to say hello, I am here as I know you are all there for me which I have witnessed in great awe when I was struggling to deal with my own limitations and inability to finish the race. So let's be there for each other as a community.

On Mental Health

Since the first day of planning this event, I have been trying to think of ways to say certain things in an attempt to get people to reach out and I have decided the best thing to do is tell my own story of thoughts and feelings and what has hindered or helped my own progress in the past.
When I was 19/20, suicidal thoughts entered my head for the first time. I was out with some friends a week before Christmas and without taking any drink or discussing anything to anyone, I went to the nearest lake to end it all. My father took me out of the lake after he missed a phone call from me and noticed something was up. That was the beginning of many depressive days and much suffering. With no warning or no apparent cause, it just hit me like a train. I immediately thought, there is definitely something wrong with me because there was a believe that it didn't happen to men unless 'you were soft or too sensitive'. Well if that was the case which I don't believe it is, but if it was, it was certainly about to change because it was these years that have formed my mentality into what it is now, I would have never been fit to take on any challenges if it wasn't for my depression. As Carl Jung has said "No tree can grow to heaven unless its roots reach down to hell". So I spread my roots in hell and I urge anyone going through suffering to do the same, what I mean by this is, do whatever it takes to survive, if it is the thought of your family that keeps you alive, focus on them, if it is your goals and ideas for the future, focus and highlight them, for me it was a mixture of the two. Once it is a healthy thought and not one born out of craving or Grasping, then it is of benefit to you to focus on it.
Of course, it is not just as simple as it sounds because there are days that will make you question everything about yourself and your world, and it will take alot of luck and resilience to survive but do not try hide from these days or this suffering. The more I tried to get away from my suffering, the more it actually caused.
There were times I wanted to escape the pain by any means necessary because I felt I lacked something, like I was only a percentage of a person and that in a year or 4 years from now, I will be whole and worthy, as schopenhauer said "We are Eternally becoming and never being", feeling like we are constantly missing something from ourselves and will never be happy until we obtain it. We will never obtain it because there is no IT to actually obtain.

Sometimes it felt like there was some vacuum or hole within me and I wanted to fill it with desires, material things or anything that would ease it. But we all have this void within us and whatever we choose to fill it with, we will eventually become that. So If you turn to alcohol when you are suffering, you will create a dependency with it and you may crave it even when your not suffering anymore. So fill the void with something that is worthy of you.

Looking back now, it is of benefit to take solace in humanity's commonality because whether we choose to admit it or not, we all have fears, doubts, desires and anxieties that we do not want, but they are here to help us learn more about ourselves. If you think of any sickness, it is here to teach us something about the body, like a broken leg teaches us the limits and flexibility of our body, a headache teaches us of our sensitivity to certain things like day light, food, etc. Depression and anxiety are no different, they are here to teach us something that is in conflict with our life and the way we are living it.

The bottom line is, that you are not alone in your suffering, everyone experiences pain and suffering. Not only is it 'OK NOT BE OK', but sometimes it is imperative not to be OK. We need our suffering but we also need to know how to cope with it, in order to survive it. If we were happy all the time we would not appreciate or be grateful for it, it is our days of suffering that gives us gratitude for better days.

It is the lies that we tell ourselves on these depressive days that we should also try to uncover, I believe nothing should be taken as a fact. On these days we will believe 'nobody cares', if we try hard to probe this thought, we will find somebody cares and even if nobody does care, why is that having such an effect on us? It is having this effect because people caring and our own worth are interlinked, we want to feel we have something to offer.
I hear it alot around suicide when people say 'how could they do it on their families?', or 'they mustn't have been thinking of their families', I believe they may have been thinking too much about their families but in a defragmented way, a person who dies by suicide believes that they were relieving there families of a burden and the burden was themselves. Their thoughts created such a distorted reality that they became convinced that suicide was the best outcome for themselves and their family. So these questions and remarks remain to be what was first thought, hurtful and unhelpful.

I do not believe that we ever fully get  over mental illness, we can get through it but there are still days when I find myself struggling to do small tasks, I believe it comes back at times, to remind me of my purpose which I sometimes get it hard to find. But we can strive for better coping skills and we can help each other strive for better in general. Together we can help each other through anything and together we can ease the suffering.
If this connects with you in any way, shape or form, please get in touch.

My 'why' behind this challange

"When you know your WHY, you can endure any HOW"- Viktor E Frankl

So my 'why' behind this run, is for a few different reasons. My first reason is for awareness for Pieta House because I have seen first hand the great work that they do and I admire their passion to save lives and their readiness to help anyone suffering from mental illness.

Secondly, I have lost too many people to suicide, I've grown up seeing people, end their lives by their own hand. I have been to two funerals this year alone, for young people who died by suicide and I am not going to stand at a third.
There is a crisis of mental health in our country at the moment and it will continue to get worse if we do not act now. I take it personally, when I hear of a suicide death because I know there is more that I can do to help. That is why I'm urging everyone to get in touch, on private message or email (reburnsteve@gmail.com) to just have a conversation about how your feeling or about life or anything that is important to you.
Thirdly, I want to promote a few different ideas around having a positive mental health or a mental wealth. The importance of a persons purpose (external) and being (internal). I believe in order to change ideas around mental health, we must find purpose in our suffering because it is not about being happy all the time but about finding a meaning for your pain. I often give the example of a man who lost his wife after nearly 50 years of marriage and he is suffering with him being left behind and missing his wife so much. He tells this to a doctor and the doctor says, "isn't it better that you suffer for loosing her instead of her suffering for loosing you because she may not have been able to cope as well as you with the loss", this changed his perspective, it did not cure his pain for loosing his wife but it gave him a purpose to continue in the memory of his wife.

Fourthly, Christmas is a hard time for everyone, especially those who have an empty chair at their Christmas Dinner table this year. On a personal level, it always reminds me of my own suicide attempts and depression, so I know what it's like to be at the lowest level around this time of year. I know what it is to question everything you live for, to yearn for something more than mere existence. To be in a purgatory-ness of emotion, not being able to find joy in anything, not being able to look ahead to better days, once described by Stephen Fry as "a future-less future". I want to give people solace in the fact, that it is not your life that you want to end but your pain, you want to save yourself from your own suffering because it seems like a worse thing than death, showing that deep down you actually care about yourself enough to save you from your pain. There are many other ways to bring you from this pain, like looking for a purpose in your life. If you cannot see one, make one, sometimes I cannot find meaning for my own life, that is why I want to do events like these because if I can give others hope and purpose, this will have a domino effect on me.
I want to show people that with willingness and endeavour and some luck thrown in, it is possible to overcome challenges. I want people to look at me and say "well if a below average lad like that who had/has depression can do something like that, I can definitely overcome my own challenges and achieve my own goals".
I also want to show the compassionate nature of people, because I know if I fall down, I will be picked up, if I reach a mental brick wall, I know someone will be there to carry me through it, I want this to be a metaphor for depression or mental illness in that sense, to show that no one is ever alone because people will always want to help.
The reason for doing it in my barefeet is because I want this to be the hardest physical challenge I've ever faced, so I can learn about myself more and  test my capabilities and be better fit to help people in the future as a result.
Together we can end the suffering, together we can remember those we have lost and together we can fill our own life with meaning.

Stephens no socks run for suicide

On Christmas day at 9am in letterkenny Co donegal I will begin running (barefooted) and I will not finish until the 29th of December in killarney in Co kerry, it is 400km over 4-5 days without stopping. I am doing this for Pieta House in an effort to remember everyone who died by suicide, to also send out the message that I am here to help anyone who is suffering at the moment and not sure what to do. To all these people, I say come join me either virtually, spiritually or physically. We can accomplish anything together. I am also doing this for myself, to find my own meaning and purpose on this earth. There is a crisis happening at the moment because of certain circumstances but with love, compassion and knowledge, we can save lives.

One death by suicide is too many, one day lost to depression or anxiety is too long, so let's do this together. Like/share and get the word out.

Thank you to my Supporters

Stephen Claire forwarded your story to me. I am so impressed by your generosity and courage. We sometimes bite off more than we can chew. That does in no way invalidate your efforts but rather glorifies your intentions. Stephen, do not for a second consider this a failure. Any effort made for the good of others is a prayer that so pleases God. Let yourself feel proud. Now to Pieta - so needed. My husband Owen, an alcoholic, committed suicide and I am fortunate to live the other side of it. Owen went straight into the arms of God and was filled with love and comfort. I was able to rejoice that he no longer suffered. We so miss him. Love to you.
